Business investor and philanthropist Mouli Cohen and his wife, lifestyle consultant Stacy Cohen, have extended their aid to the local orphanage of the Jewish community in Odessa, Ukraine, leading to its speedy growth and success. The orphanage, seen as the new home for 55 orphaned Ukrainian boys and girls whose parents were primarily alcoholics, drug users or in no condition to be caring for them, says that their gratitude to the Cohens are outspoken. It has been ten years since it has been founded in 1999, beginning with the first two children who were in dire straits after their mother had suffered a tragic death.

Rabbi Wolf, the chief Rabbi of the community, believes that such growth and room to support more children could not have been done without the significant donations from Mr. Mouli Cohen. In turn, the American-Jewish Cohen and his wife says that they are only too glad to help this orphanage, and that these children’s academic efforts (earning Regional and Local prizes in Mathematics and English), makes the donations even more meaningful. With their donations and the children’s achievements, the graduating children are given matriculation certificates that ensure them of being given the chance to continue even higher studies in academic institutions worldwide.

With his strong sense for good investments, Mouli Cohen defines the next step, the startup, as “stressful and unpredictable”. It takes true leadership and emotional commitment to succeed in the business. Hundreds of new businesses are starting every day, and those who do not employ the proper investment strategies and management die out quickly.
One of the things to remember, says Mr. Cohen, is that the smallest victories must be celebrated. He adds that startup company environments should be fun to further bolster the confidence of its new employees. Employee morale in a startup company is very important in the sense that these people are the ones upon whom the company’s future relies. They should be acknowledged in their efforts and proper rewards should be meted out when called for.

It is in this environment that Mouli Cohen says that a passionate and pragmatic leader must become the central hub as he who carries the company’s dream. If he “champions” this dream with diligence and vigor, the rest of the employees would continue to believe in it and carry onward with a good outlook on the business.
It is these people, these teams, who make up the company and once they have been entrusted with the responsibility of running it, the leader must also recognize their efforts and successes. With the right people and the right attitude, there will be solutions to problems, great ideas, and overall: a successful startup company.

Esteemed philanthropist and entrepreneur Mouli Cohen believes that a company’s success depends upon its talents.

Talents vs. Resources

Many organizations think of their employees as resources: expandable and easily replaceable. Cohen thinks otherwise. He refers to employees as talents and believes that proper handling, monitoring, and motivation are keys to a successful business. These talents directly deal with clients and these deals bring in the business. If talents are properly trained and motivated, then the income and return on investment of a company have the potential to double, if not triple.

From MOULI COHEN

Recruiting and Managing

He also recommends that the recruiting process should be taken seriously, as this will determine the future of an organization. Business expert Mouli Cohen says that the Human Resources department and its headhunters should be directly under the company’s CEO in order to properly filter candidates.

In terms of managing talents, Cohen explains that there must be a balance between rewarding and accountability. Talents must never feel that they have failed the company since this lowers morale and ultimately, productivity. Instead, they should be properly motivated and trained. On the other hand, talents should be made accountable for their mistakes as well. Overlooking mistakes give clients the impression that a company does not strive for quality and would settle for mediocre work results.

Mouli Cohen continues to make the world a better place. A philanthropist who makes contributions to hundreds of organizations worldwide, he continues to divide his time between his successful businesses and his benevolent lifestyle.

Driven by his success, Cohen felt very blessed and wanted to give his fortune back to society. He met the challenge of a colleague who asked how to make good deeds to multitudes of beneficiaries, given the scarce resources in today’s society. He responded that by encouraging organizations and communities, as well as updating local leaders with the latest programs and facilities, will both pave way to the change which will alleviate millions of lives.

Mouli Cohen established the Child Vision Campaign – a worldwide effort which cured blindness in more than a hundred thousand people in India and Nepal. Cohen speaks about how blind children do not experience normal childhoods, and made it his life goal to extinguish childhood blindness. He deems that childhood blindness could be eradicated by 40% in the next five to seven years.

Cohen also actively donates to the Camp Okizu. The camp is a cancer treating center for children in California, which is filled to the brim with thousands of children during summers. Every child enrolled in this camp receives immunology treatments in any of California’s 35 hospitals.

Mouli Cohen, one of the most important entrepreneurs in the biotechnology industry, is also one of the staunchest supporters of the advancement of stem cell research. His work both in business and philanthropy has benefited an area of study he believes to hold some of the greatest possibilities for advancement that science has seen in decades.

For the past 10 years, Cohen has been highly involved in the support of stem cell research projects. One of his biggest benefactors is the University of California, San Francisco’s (UCSF) Stem Cell Biology program. UCSF’s Eli and Edythe Broad Center of Regeneration Medicine and Stem Cell Research, one of the leading institutions in its field, was one of those gravely affected by President Bush’s announcement in August 2001 that limited federal funding of stem cell research.

Following the announcement, UCSF lost one of its leading stem cell researchers, Dr. Roger Pedersen, to Cambridge University in England where he continued his work with less restriction and more funding. Losing a scientist of his caliber was a frustrating loss for the US prompting Cohen to jump into the opportunity to help salvage the research.

Working closely with his friend Dr. Jeffrey Bluestone, Interim Director of the Developmental and Stem Cell Biology Program of UCSF, Cohen initiated efforts to make sure that the best researchers continue to work in American facilities. He and his wife, Stacy, also hosted a reception to promote UCSF’s Alzheimer’s Research, one of the potential benefactors of stem cell research.

Learn more about Cohen’s initiatives to support the advancement of stem cell research and other scientific and philanthropic ventures by visiting MouliCohen.com.

Mouli Cohen, one of the most successful entrepreneurs in the biotechnology, pharmaceutical and high technology industries, is also one of the staunchest supporters of the arts. He believes that the sense of balance and beauty that he gets from appreciating art gives him renewed perspective when dealing with his businesses.

Taking inspiration from his impressive collection of artworks, Cohen finds business techniques quite similar to the way artists work. His favorite art period, the 20th century, is filled with iconic artists who are highly talented and very competitive. He has observed similarities among styles of artists, as well as excellent innovations in the artworks he has seen. Often, these innovations are capitalized in other artworks by fellow artists, much like how entrepreneurs study their competition and recreate the ideas they get from them.

This non-business perspective provides Cohen much needed rejuvenation from the often stressful world of business. He recounts that he even gets to practice his entrepreneurial principles in choosing and buying art. As he invests in businesses he personally has a positive feeling about, Cohen buys art that he likes. No emotional investment necessary, but he makes sure that he personally enjoys and appreciates them. Fortunately for him, most of his collection have kept their value fantastically as his businesses have also flourished steadily.

As an art appreciator, a philanthropist, and an investor, Mouli Cohen finds the art world as an avenue to practice and combine many of his passions in a singular endeavor. Because of this gain, he has initiated widespread efforts to support art education and promotion in the US and abroad. He believes it is his responsibility to give back to the institution that has been a source of inspiration and wonder for him.
